Cane & Grain

Manchester’s Northern Quarter is fast becoming a magnet for creative types, coffee shops and indie spaces. There’s also room for some pretty epic bars including Cane & Grain, from the folks behind nearby tiki joint Liars Club. Here, homage is paid to rum, ribs, beer and bourbon so expect some down and dirty good times. Stacking crates line the walls and on a Friday night it’s standing room only. Grab yourself a Deep South Zombie (a lethal mix of bourbons and fruit juices with a flaming sugar cube) crafted by fast-working tattooed bartenders. The choice of beer is pretty dazzling too, including house brew Cane & Grain lager and American favourites Anchor Steam, Blue Moon and Flying Dog. Take a cocktail masterclass in the first-floor bar or get cosy in the basement tiki hideaway section, Liars Lounge – but don’t arrive expecting a quiet drink.
