Pub group Draft House continues its domination of the capital with its 2017 takeover of the Grand Union portfolio. Its latest site is The Tankard in Lambeth, which still has its original 1825 name. Draft House is aiming to keep some of its old-school charm in other areas too, via a modern take on its original Victorian design, when it apparently hosted the likes of Charlie Chaplin for a beer or two. The expectedly strong selection of craft beers is served with matching British cheeses, and there’s also a great Sunday roast option. The jewel in the crown though, is the site’s large roof terrace, which was originally used as a way for punters to look over the high wall surrounding the Bethlem Insane Asylum (otherwise known as Bedlam) and gawk at the goings on there. Now, drinkers can overlook Lambeth’s goings on of a Friday night, and we don’t imagine the views will be much different…
